What you'll do:

  • Craft delicious meals: Plan and prepare weekly menus featuring delicious recipes and nutritious meals
  • Be a kitchen maestro: Cook and serve meals that cater to various dietary needs, ensuring every child enjoys a healthy, balanced diet
  • Champion food safety: Maintain the highest standards of food safety and hygience, following all regulations
  • Engage and educate: Collaborate with staff and families to understand dietary needs and preferences, and educate children about the significance of food
  • Manage with precision: Handle kitchen inventory, order supplies and groceries, and ensure everything runs smoothly

What we're looking for:

  • Culinary expertise: Proven experience as a cook or chef, ideally in a child care or educational setting; must be able to independently run a kitchen and prepare food for up to 150 children
  • Cultural insight: Deep appreciation and understanding of Indigenous cultures, especially their culinary practices
  • Nutritional knowledge: Strong understanding of nutrition and the dietary needs of young children
  • Certification: Current Safe Food Handling certificate and familiarity with food safety regulations, also requires a valid G driver's license and own vehicle for transportation of grocery orders as well as daily transportation of hot lunch from our main site in St. Vincent school to our off-site in St. Ann school
  • Communication skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage with children, staff, and families
  • Organizational ability: Strong organizational and time management skills, capable of multitasking effectively

  • Negotiable schedule: There is some flexibility in the scheduled hours in that the role could be anywhere from 30 to 40 hours per week, provided the schedule is determined in agreement with the Site Supervisor and is able to be accommodated for while meeting the needs of our programs (for instance, the start time could be 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM depending on preference, and the end time could be anywhere from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM depending on preference)
