Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services Corporation (NALSC) is seeking a highly motivated individual to take on the position of Director of Legal Services. The Director of Legal Services is based in Thunder Bay and is responsible for overseeing the Nishnawbe-Aski Legal Services Corporation’s (NALSC) Legal Aid (LA) administrative operations in fulfilling the organizations mandate to vision, mission, values, and the strategic plan.

Primary Job Duties Include:
• Oversee the daily operations of the Legal Aid (LA) department and delivery of legal services in NAN.
• Oversee the work of LA staff to ensure compliance with Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) policies and procedures.
• Coordinate with NALSC programs and LAO to promote the delivery of programs in NAN.
• Ensure compliance of LAO policy and procedures and participate in LAO training as required.
• Review NALSC/LAO budget with Executive Director and Finance Department to plan yearly budgeting.
• Represent NALSC as delegated in working collaboratively with NAN communities, government partners, funders, and agency counterparts to promote NALSC’s mandate to vision, mission & values.
• Provide day-to-day supervision of Legal Aid, Gladue, PLE, and Staff Lawyer programs.
• Attend all committees assigned to the Director of Legal Services role.

Requirements
• Must be a lawyer, called to the Bar in Ontario, with a minimum of 5 – 10 years relevant
experiences in criminal, family, poverty law, aboriginal law and administrative matters with an in-depth understanding of indigenous law and justice.
• Knowledge of legal systems, board governance, public policy, service-delivery, and Indigenous cultural competency is required.
• Must have excellent leadership and management skills.
• Must have an in-depth knowledge of Legal Services Act 2020, regulations/policies.
• Ability to effectively negotiate, collaborate and network with third parties.
• Good understanding of not-for-profit board governance and distinction between Directorial duties and responsibilities.
• Ability to communicate in Anishnawbe language will be an asset.
• Excellent knowledge of government funding and reporting requirements.
• Must be able to provide a clear criminal records check.

Salary: In accordance with NALSC/LAO Staff Lawyer pay grid

We are excited to announce a new opportunity to join our management team as Executive Director at Nishnawbe Aski Legal Services Corporation (NALSC). Under the direction of the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have the responsibility of overseeing the operations of Nishnawbe Aski Legal Services Corporation (the “Corporation”) and supporting the Board of Directors to ensure the organization is working within its Vision and Mandate.

The Executive Director is responsible for a variety of duties ranging from overseeing human and financial obligations of the corporation, negotiating for program funding, advocating for justice services for NAN people and communities along with building and maintaining healthy relationships with partners, stakeholders, and the Chiefs of Nishnawbe-Aski Nation.

Qualifications:
• Must possess, at a minimum, a post-secondary degree or diploma in the areas of law, business administration, finance, human resources or other related fields.
• A minimum of 5 years’ management experience
• Education and/or equivalent experience in the Ontario Legal system.
• Familiar with geographical area of Nishnawbe-Aski Legal communities.
• Experience with the Euro-Canadian Legal system and knowledge of indigenous justice systems.
• Public speaking skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Willingness to communicate with others about law related and traditional issues.
• Must be willing and able to travel extensively.
• Ability to speak Ojibway, Oji-Cree, Cree would be a definite asset.

The Victim Witness Liaison program is mandated to improve the quality of services to crime victims and witnesses of crime. The Victim Witness worker assists victims and witnesses of all ages in dealing with consequences of victimization and helps them through the criminal justice process.

S/he acts as support, ensures immediate needs are addressed such as safety, referring to
appropriate resources, assists victims and witnesses with the court process and/or to participate in a restorative justice process and liaises with appropriate agencies and service organizations.

Qualifications:
• Education or experience in social work, mental health, paralegal, or related field

Talking Together is funded by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services. The purpose of the program is to utilize a traditional/alternative justice approach to resolving child welfare/family matters in order to avoid unnecessary litigation. The process used is the Circle in order to empower families to arrive at acceptable resolutions to child welfare matters. Circles are arranged and conducted by a Talking Together Facilitator.

Qualifications:
• Ability to speak the language and knowledge of culture an asset.
• Experience and knowledge of the child welfare system is an asset
• This position requires at a minimum a secondary school diploma with related work experience.
• It is preferred that the TTF hold a post-secondary degree or diploma in social work, child and family worker program, mental health or related fields
