BINGWI NEYAASHI ANISHINAABEK

 

BINGWI NEYAASHI ANISHINAABEK

Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek is an Ojibwa First Nation with a registered population of approximately 250 people. Formed in 1991, the First Nation occupies the lands formerly known as the Lake Nipigon Provincial Park in Northwestern Ontario.

The total land base is approximately 984 hectares and is geographically located west of Highway 11 on the shore of Lake Nipigon - Ontario's largest inland lake. The closest Township is Beardmore in the Municipality of Greenstone.

The First Nation, which was established as Sand Point First Nation Reserve on April 22 2010 by the government of Canada, abuts the North end of Biinjitiwaabik Zaaging Anishinaabek reserve.  It is 63 kilometres north of the Trans-Canada Highway at Nipigon.

Jordan Hatton, M.A.

Director of Economic Development for BNA

Jordan Hatton is the Director of Economic Development for Bingwi Neyaashi Anishinaabek. He is responsible for working with both government and industry in order to ensure that the land and water is cared for in an environmentally sound manner, while at the same time seeing to it that the First Nation is carefully moving ahead on the development of its natural resources, including initiatives in forestry, mining, wind, and hydroelectric developments, and assists with employment and training initiatives. Jordan helps with securing funding for various initiatives, he works to ensure that training opportunities are available for interested members, he regularly consults with government and industry on a variety of matters, and he provides the best information possible to Chief and Council so that they can make informed decisions about the best way forward for the community. As well as being the Director of Economic Development, Jordan is also the Consultation Coordinator for the First Nation. Through this role, Jordan consults the membership on the Project, sits on various Boards and Committees, writes newsletters and reports, and maps the aboriginal values of the BNA membership.

Born and raised in Thunder Bay, Jordan Hatton left the city after high school. During this period, he obtained his B.A. and Master’s Degrees in Political Science from the University of Guelph, completed a year-long internship on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and worked across the country as a University research assistant and an assistant for a Member of Parliament. When he returned to Thunder Bay, he took on a position working on the Little Jackfish Project and various Lands and Resource initiatives with Kiashke Zaaging Anishinaabek. He has been working for Bingwi Neyaashi Anshinaabek since January 2011.

Jordan currently resides in his home in Thunder Bay. He likes to spend time with his family and friends, and enjoys fishing, camping, cross country skiing, and traveling. His most intense interests include travel, politics and heavy metal.
